Dermal Fillers & Cosmetic Injections

Typically there is no “down-time” following treatment with dermal filler injections. Some patients, especially those who bruise easily, may experience a small amount of bruising around the injection site; if bruising occurs, most patients find that it can easily be covered by makeup until the bruise resolves, which usually takes a few days.

 

Some patients may also experience mild tenderness or swelling in the injection areas for a few days.

Dermal filler injections typically lead to an immediate subtle increase in the fullness of tissue in targeted areas.

The prescription-only medication which is injected during has an effect for approximately six to twelve months, although the effects vary greatly depending on the patient themselves, the location of the injections, the particular type of filler used and amount of filler used.

Treatment with Dermapen® may improve the results and duration of other treatments including treatment with dermal fillers. It is therefore common to include Dermapen® as part of an individualised treatment plan which includes anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers.

 

It is recommended that you have not had treatments with anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers for at least two weeks prior to treatment with Dermapen®. Although treatment with dermal fillers is a cosmetic procedure, it’s important to understand that it is still a medical procedure, and that some small risks exist, as for any medical procedure.

The most common side-effect is a small amount of bruising around the injection site, especially in those who bruise easily. All parts of the face can swell, but the lips are the most common area to swell. It will usually settle in twenty-four to seventy-two hours.

 

A small number of patients may be able to feel small, palpable beads or lumps under the skin; these usually resolve without treatment after a few days. Patients with a history of cold sores are advised to apply acyclovir cream (available over the counter at the chemist) to their lips five times daily for two days post treatment to decrease the chance of cold sores returning.

 

Your doctor or nurse will discuss this with you in detail with you in your initial consultation. Allergic reactions are also possible after any medication injection, although the likelihood of this is small.

 

There have also been reports of extremely rare but serious complications in patients having treatment with dermal fillers. Your doctor will discuss these in detail with you in your initial consultation.

After your treatment with dermal filler injections, it is essential that you follow the instructions given to you by your doctor or nurse to minimise the chance of possible side-effects. You should not massage or apply any pressure to the area of injection for twenty-four hours following treatment.

 

You should also not undertake any strenuous activity or activities which may cause excessive sweating for twenty-four hours. It is recommended to keep your head in an upright position (i.e. Not to lie down with your head flat) for four hours after treatment with dermal filler injections.

Patients with skin infections or other skin diseases at the site of injection will have to postpone their treatment until the injection site is clear. Some medications (for example, aspirin and warfarin) may lead to increased risk of bleeding and bruising, and it may be safer to avoid dermal filler injections.
